Many a story was left out of the main narrative of history, whether left in the footnotes or outright ignored. Here, I will be highlighting those stories in a collection of speculative biographical short stories of the women left in the footnotes of history, from the only American female POW of World War II to the world’s first computer programmer to America’s first female physician and only female Medal of Honor recipient to one of the most formidable war correspondents in a time where next to none were female to the many others whose stories will be brought to light in this book, women have always had a place in history—and it’s time we recognized the ones who were pushed to the sidelines.

But she's out of that life now, settled down, working a normal 9 to 5; she's even gotten engaged to the love of her life. But when someone from her old life shows up, she has to confront her past, and come to terms with the face in the mirror wearing a different name. And maybe, just maybe, she'll find a way to love herself as much as she loves her fiancé along the way.

Elsie feels as though sh’s just gained her sea legs with teaching—that is, until a recurring problem with absences, tardies, and being left after school for a concerning amount of time means she, as a mandated reporter, might have to talk to DFACS about the father of one of the sweetest girls in her class. Elsie feels for Andy Parker, widowed three years ago, but the situation has gotten so bad she’s now bringing food for little Emily on a daily basis. She didn’t expect her involvement to draw her into a tangled web that goes far deeper than a single dad trying to care for his daughter.

She should have listened to her mother about going into education. At least if she was a writer her concerns about Not Getting Killed would be plot-related instead of reality.

1942. Post-bombing of Pearl Harbor, America is in a righteous fervor, craving recompense, and that includes one twenty-five-year-old Joseph Bradshaw. He joins up, an officer sent to the Pacific Theater—and one of America’s first Japanese POWs. Incredibly unfortunate situation for his twenty-two-year-old wife left behind, Elsie Bradshaw, who finds out soon after his leaving that she is pregnant.

1946. The tide has turned, and Elsie has her husband back at home, knows he’s alive; but having built a life without him, it’s a struggle adjusting to a new post-war world together when they’ve become such different people. How will they learn to re-fuse their lives together when the metal has become so twisted and warped?

She’s got it all taken care of… save, of course, that last one. Her best friend, Mia, gives her a solution: fake dating Mia’s older brother, Jacob, recently back from a military tour.  Ella knew it was a bad idea, but went along with it; if she knew it was a I’m-about-to-spend-the-majority-of-my-time-being-shot-at level bad idea, she probably would have reconsidered.

Isabela Santos knew she was adopted. How could she not? Her adoptive father, who she calls Tio, is Hispanic, while she is... incredibly Caucasian. Like, pale-enough-to-be-a-redhead Caucasian. Adopted internationally from California when she was three, Isabela grew up in Mexico with her Tio Jorge until she was ten, when she moved back to the States. She grew, making friends and crushes, achieving some dreams and not so much others. But when a fingerprinting demonstration at a school assembly comes back with a Missing Persons case attached, Isabela's life is flipped on its head and she is reunited with her birth family. But how can she live up to the idea of the child they lost, especially considering she doesn't even know who they are?

A girl, wanting a place where she feels she fits, wanting an identity she can accept. Her father, a lawyer, unsteady and lost as to how to relate to his child. A stepmother and half-brother, a new family replacing the girl in a way that leaves her in the lurch. And a drug-addict mother, on the other side of the country, prompting that girl to leave her home for an unadvisable cross-country roadtrip in hopes of finding that missing piece in a mother that maybe, just maybe, she can convince to want her.
